Input/Output Streaming Complexity of Reversal and Sorting

چکیده
This work revisits the study of streaming algorithms where both input and output are data streams. While streaming algorithms with multiple streams have been studied before, such as in the context of sorting, most assumed very nonrestrictive models and thus had weak lower bounds. We consider data streams with restricted access, such as read-only and write-only streams, as opposed to read-write streams. We also require streams to be processed in one direction only when multiple passes are allowed. Last, we forbid the use of any other external streams. Reversing a stream has been demonstrated to allow exponential speed-up for several decision problems. Therefore, it naturally arises as the bottleneck problem of our model. We give several tight bounds for reversing the input stream depending on the model. We also study the problem of sorting, and improve previously known algorithms in terms of space used on the two streams. ∗Partially supported by the French ANR Blanc project ANR-12-BS02-005 (RDAM) †[email protected] ‡[email protected]

Unidirectional Input/Output Streaming Complexity of Reversal and Sorting
We consider unidirectional data streams with restricted access, such as read-only and write-only streams. For read-write streams, we also introduce a new complexity measure called expansion, the ratio between the space used on the stream and the input size. We give tight bounds for the complexity of reversing a stream of length n in several of the possible models. In the read-only and write-onl...
متن کاملThe Effect of Comprehensible Input and Comprehensible Output on the Accuracy and Complexity of Iranian EFL Learners’ Oral Speech
This study aimed at investigating the relative impact of comprehensible input and comprehensible output on the development of grammatical accuracy and syntactic complexity of Iranian EFL learners’ oral production. Participants were 60 female EFL learners selected from a whole population pool of 80 based on the standard test of IELTS. To investigate the research questions, the participants were ...
متن کاملReversal Distances for Strings with Few Blocks or Small Alphabets
We study the String Reversal Distance problem, an extension of the well-known Sorting by Reversals problem. String Reversal Distance takes two strings S and T as input, and asks for a minimum number of reversals to obtain T from S. We consider four variants: String Reversal Distance, String Prefix Reversal Distance (in which any reversal must include the first letter of the string), and the sig...
متن کاملThe use of intelligent data analysis techniques for system-level design: a software estimation example
System-level designers typically rely on white-box detailed descriptions of embedded systems in order to perform their design choices and optimisations. The white-box approach assumes that the complexity of the system can be managed by decomposing the global system into a set of simple and well-described components. This assumption is generally not true when non-linear interactions happen betwe...
متن کاملA Soft-Input Soft-Output Target Detection Algorithm for Passive Radar
Abstract: This paper proposes a novel scheme for multi-static passive radar processing, based on soft-input soft-output processing and Bayesian sparse estimation. In this scheme, each receiver estimates the probability of target presence based on its received signal and the prior information received from a central processor. The resulting posterior target probabilities are transmitted to the c...
